“The cop and the anthem” is one of the most famous stories of O. Henry. The story is short but meaningful. It makes a good impression on me. However, the end of the story is not a happy ending. Soapy, the main character of the story, has to live on the Island for three months. Some people think that is good for him, but some think that is not. In my opinion, living on the Island is not good for Soapy because he will be disappointed, his hope will be stamped out and he will waste his time.

Firstly, living three months on the Island makes him disappointed. At the end of the story, we can see that Soapy has changed his soul. He wanted to “pull himself out of the mire”. He wanted to change his life. He intends to find a job tomorrow. However, that “tomorrow” never comes because he was arrested. Everything changes. Changing in soul is not easy, but he did it. He found the truth in life for himself. Suddenly his hope and motive were gone because he could not do anything on the Island. That can make him disappointed and loosing his truth that is not easy to find. Therefore, I think this ending is not good for him.

The second reason is that the life in prison will stamp out his hope. Although he will have food to eat and maybe warm place to stay, he will have nothing to do. In the prison, he might meet some people that have the same circumstance, jobless, homeless and hopeless. Every day he will meet and might talk to those people who do not have any hope about their future. Therefore, how can he get hope and motive for his life? Although he can keep that change in his soul and intend to change his life, the life during three months on the Island will stamp out his hope. Moreover, there is not the anthem that has changed his soul in the prison. He might forget it and does not want to change any more. Therefore, I think living three months on the Island is not good for him. He had better live outside and listen to the anthem every day so that he can keep something beautiful in mind and strong feeling of changing his life.

Beside those two reasons, this ending is not good for Soapy for one more reason that is not less important: waste of time.

The last reason is that he will waste his time by living on the Island. Three months is not long but not short. That time can make him forget the anthem and he might be back to his dying life when he is out. If he can live three months outside the prison, he might find a new job, can earn money and he might have time to go to the church and listen to the anthem again. That will make him keep that strong feeling of changing his life. If he can have that ending I think that is a good chance for him to change his life.

Those are three reasons that I think Soapy’s life during three months on the island is not good for him. That life will make him disappointed, make his hope be stamped out and waste his time. I myself love this story a lot. It gave me a good lesson to learn: life is never as beautiful as we thought. Everything we expect is not easily comes with us. That’s life. Therefore, if we have ability to give someone a chance, just give him and hope he know how to use it.
